BCM is proud to announce the final recipients of the K20 Grant Fund!

Throughout the nomination and voting period, our community came together to recognize nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and academic institutions dedicated to serving the 9th Ward and St. Bernard Parish. Each of the recipients reflects BCM’s core values of Faithfulness, Compassion, Respect, Sustainability, and Transparency.

 

K20 Grant Recipients

Lagniappe Grant Recipient

All organizations will receive general operating grants to support their existing work. The K20 Grant recipients will each receive $40,000, and the Lagniappe recipient will be awarded $10,000.

Our Katrina Story

Since 1996, Baptist Community Ministries (BCM) has been a steadfast advocate for the health and wellbeing of all who call Greater New Orleans home. Through philanthropic investments in health, education, public safety, and faith-based direct services, BCM works alongside neighbors to build a healthy, safe, and thriving community for all.

The devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 only strengthened BCM’s resolve. In the wake of this unparalleled disaster, we deepened partnerships with local healthcare and nonprofit organizations, expanded our chaplaincy and congregational wellness programs, and upheld funding commitments for nonprofits navigating immense uncertainty. Our response was driven by a shared commitment to care for the most vulnerable and to support the recovery of our region.

August 29, 2005, forever marked our communities, yet the story since then is one of strength, innovation, and hope. BCM is proud to have played a role in rebuilding and transforming health, education, and public safety systems through homegrown strategies and solutions. As we commemorate the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, we honor the lives lost, celebrate the strength of community, and reaffirm our unwavering commitment to Greater New Orleans.

“We have made incredible progress as a community over the past two decades, but there is still work to be done,” said Inman J. Houston, CEO of Baptist Community Ministries. “BCM remains committed to supporting our neighbors and empowering local organizations that are building a brighter future for all.”

 

Hurricane Katrina displaced millions and caused catastrophic damage to homes and communities across the region. The 9th Ward and neighboring St. Bernard Parish were among the hardest hit, and recovery in these areas has been slow. In the 9th Ward, fewer than 35% of households have rebuilt. In St. Bernard Parish, the population has struggled to rebound, with thousands relocating and entire neighborhoods reshaped by the storm.

The progress made in these communities is a testament to the determination of residents and the dedication of nonprofit organizations that refused to let vibrant neighborhoods fade into history. To mark the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, BCM is awarding a total of $400,000 in general operating grants to organizations driving transformative impact in the 9th Ward and St. Bernard Parish – two of the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina.
